Slovenia experienced a record-breaking year for tourism in 2023, with over six million visitors and more than 16 million nights spent in hotels and other accommodations, marking a 2% increase from the previous peak year of 2019.
Foreign tourists contributed significantly, representing 72% of all overnight stays. Germany remained the top source market, followed by Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Croatia.
Ljubljana, the capital, saw the strongest growth in visitor numbers, recording a remarkable 20% increase. Urban and mountain municipalities were the most popular destinations, while spa towns and coastal areas experienced a decrease in visitors.
Accommodation providers reported a notable increase in arrivals and overnight stays in December 2023 compared to the previous year, with foreign tourists contributing significantly to this growth.
Despite challenges such as floods during the peak season, the tourism industry demonstrated resilience, attributed in part to extensive investment in tourism infrastructure, particularly in mountain areas. The Slovenian Tourist Board highlighted the country's faster recovery compared to European and global tourism and expects further growth, particularly emphasizing a record number of American tourists in 2023, marking a 31% increase from the previous year.
