Slovenia showcases sustainable construction at Europe's premier Urban Future Conference

A delegation of 35 representatives from Slovenian businesses and institutions is visiting the Netherlands to participate in the Urban Future conference, a major interdisciplinary event focused on urban sustainability. Slovenia's achievements in reducing emissions in construction were highlighted during a panel organized by the TVG Institute, which showcased the country's innovative use of wood-based and traditional materials in sustainable construction.

Andrej Šmid from the TVG Institute emphasized Slovenia's unique approach to sustainable development, noting that the country mandated the use of wood-based materials in construction as early as 2011. Slovenian manufacturers are combining traditional techniques with modern technology, using materials like wood, hemp, and clay.

Dragica Marinič from the Construction Institute pointed out that the construction sector consumes the most materials and energy in the EU, stressing the need for greater circularity in the industry.

In addition to attending the conference, the Slovenian delegation participated in business forums and B2B meetings with Dutch entrepreneurs. Marko Sladojević, president of the Slovenian-Dutch Business Forum, highlighted the potential for Slovenia to serve as a regional launchpad for Dutch companies.

Urban Future is Europe’s largest urban sustainability event, bringing together experts and innovators in various fields. The next conference will take place in Lodz, Poland, with Slovenia being a strong candidate to host the 2026 event.
